Founded in the 10th century, Faro serves as the administrative capital of the Algarve region and is a key player in the country’s tourism, with its well-preserved medieval quarters, rich cultural heritage, and with what are considered some of the world's most beautiful beaches!
A Little History
The Algarve’s rich history begins in the Neolithic period, evidenced by megalithic stones and ancient settlements. It flourished under Roman rule, visible in the remains of luxurious villas and public baths, particularly in Estói, showcasing intricate mosaics and architectural innovation.
After the fall of Rome, the Algarve came under Moorish control, transforming its landscape, agriculture, and architecture. The Moors introduced advanced agricultural techniques, such as the acequia irrigation systems, and left behind a legacy of fortified towns and ornate architecture. The town of Silves, with its imposing castle, stands as a testament to the region’s significance during Moorish rule.
The Christian reconquest in the 13th century integrated the Algarve into the Kingdom of Portugal, heralding a new era of development. The region played a crucial role during the Age of Discovery, serving as a launching point for voyages led by figures like Prince Henry the Navigator. This period brought wealth, global maritime connections, and a flourishing of cultural and architectural endeavours to the Algarve.
The Algarve’s culinary scene is as rich and varied as its history, drawing heavily on the bounties of the sea. Renowned for its exceptional seafood, the region offers a plethora of dishes that showcase the freshness and flavor of local catch. Signature dishes like “Cataplana de Marisco,” a seafood stew cooked in a traditional copper pan, and “Arroz de Lingueirão,” razor clam rice, are testaments to the area’s culinary expertise. Grilled sardines, fresh tuna steaks, and octopus salads are staple delights, often seasoned with local herbs and accompanied by the region’s crisp, white wines. The Algarve also offers a sweet taste of tradition with almond and fig cakes, reflecting the Moorish influence on its cuisine. Local bus lines “Próximo” 14 and 16 connects Faro Airport with the Faro Bus Terminal in the city center.
Travel time: 15–20 minutes. Cost: ~2.50 €.

- Aerobus Get On (Vamus) available at the airport, connected to Albufeira’s Bus Terminal. / Travel time: 45 minutes. Cost: ~6 €.

Faro Old Town (Cidade Velha)

Ilha Deserta (Deserted Island)
