Course Summary

Inclusive and international classrooms bring diversity — and complexity — to communication. Teachers face the daily challenge of making learning accessible, engaging and respectful for all. They must learn to go beyond words, building understanding with students of different cultural, linguistic, socio-economic and emotional backgrounds.

This course equips educators with practical tools for inclusive communication, using multimodal strategies (visual, verbal, non-verbal), visual supports, simplified language, storytelling, body language, and culturally responsive dialogue techniques.

Participants will explore how to adapt their communication style to students’ needs, foster participation despite language barriers, and maintain an inclusive, welcoming environment for every learner.

Through experiential activities, reflection and peer practice, participants will leave with a clear action plan to make their communication practices more inclusive, engaging, and empowering.

Course Goals

This course’s learning outcomes are to:

  • Understand the key barriers to communication in diverse classrooms (language, culture, cognition);
  • Develop communication practices that support inclusion and accessibility;
  • Adapt language, tone and format to diverse student needs;
  • Use body language and visuals to reinforce understanding;
  • Address language gaps through universal communication strategies;
  • Build communication routines that foster a sense of belonging and active participation;
  • Foster cultural responsiveness and prevent misunderstandings;
  • Co-create communication-friendly learning environments with studen;
