Course Summary
Education is changing, and so are learning environments. Schools across Europe are increasingly seeking to move beyond traditional classrooms, exploring the outdoors as a powerful space for learning, creativity, collaboration, and personal development.
This course invites teachers, school leaders and educators to reimagine their teaching practices by using nature as a dynamic, inclusive and stimulating learning environment. Outdoor Education is much more than taking lessons outside: it is about integrating the natural world into the learning process to foster curiosity, active participation, sustainability awareness, and emotional engagement.
Throughout this Erasmus+ training, participants will discover methodologies, tools and ideas to plan and deliver outdoor learning activities adapted to their students and school context (whether in urban, rural or mixed settings).
The methodology of this course is based on experiential learning and active participation. Participants will engage in outdoor workshops, nature-based challenges, collaborative problem-solving, sensory activities, and project-based learning outdoors. They will explore strategies for teaching different subjects in outdoor settings.
Emphasis will also be placed on sustainability education, reconnecting students with local environments, and promoting environmental responsibility through hands-on projects like school gardens, eco-friendly initiatives, and nature-based storytelling.
By the end of the course, teachers will feel prepared to create learning experiences that go beyond the classroom walls, using their local environment as a resource for creativity, engagement, and meaningful learning.

PRACTICAL APPLICATION
Methodological Approach to Outdoor Education
In this course, outdoor environments are not presented as excursion or leisure spaces, but as intentional learning environments where structured educational activities take place.
Participants are guided to understand how natural settings can be used as pedagogical spaces to support curriculum development, active learning, inclusion, and professional growth in educational contexts.
All activities are embedded within a structured daily program of 5 hours of educational content, combining theory, practice, reflection, pedagogical transfer in line with Erasmus+ quality and eligibility requirements.
All sessions are facilitated by qualified trainers with professional experience in education, adult learning and psychosocial well-being, ensuring methodological rigour and alignment with Erasmus+ quality standards.
Practical Transfer to Educational Settings
Throughout the course, participants will:
Explore how natural and outdoor spaces can function as structured learning environments across different educational levels.
Learn to design outdoor learning activities with clear objectives, methodology and expected learning outcomes.
Analyse how outdoor education can support active learning, inclusion, collaboration and learner engagement.
Develop strategies to integrate outdoor methodologies into formal and non-formal education while maintaining curriculum alignment.
Examine examples of outdoor education practices used to enhance motivation, wellbeing and environmental awareness.
Pedagogical Application and Reflection
Participants are encouraged to:
Reflect on how outdoor education methodologies can be adapted to their own institutional and curricular context.
Identify realistic and sustainable ways to use outdoor spaces as learning environments in their professional practice.
Participate in guided discussions addressing safety, ethical considerations, inclusivity, and cultural context when implementing outdoor learning activities.
The course aims at equipping educators with practical, ethically responsible pedagogical tools to design, facilitate, and evaluate outdoor learning experiences that support learning outcomes and professional development.

It was my first cours in Erasmus and I’m very happy to be part of this! I feel inspired, motivated and I want more! I loved that energy and people I’ve met. I feel prepared to start using outdoor method at my school. Marika’s the best teacher. Whole group was really moved.

I am grateful for this week. It has been interesting and I feel at peace and balanced. I can use all the exercises we have done here in my work. I was especially touched by the trainer’s perspective on nature – it seems so right. balance within oneself, preserving nature, being a part of nature. it was inspiring

It was a wonderful adventure — both in terms of arriving on the beautiful island of Madeira and exploring the topic of outdoor education, as well as the journey of self-discovery. Marika, with great calmness and positive energy, guides participants towards understanding and truly internalizing the discussed topics. I highly recommend it!
