Planned Courses in Seville
Seville’s origins trace back to the first millennium BCE, with Tartessian and Phoenician settlements along the Guadalquivir that later became the Roman city of Hispalis. Over the centuries, it was shaped by Roman, Moorish and Christian periods, making it one of Spain’s most storied, continuously lived-in cities.
A Little History
Seville’s river bend was a Tartessian–Phoenician trading spot before Rome built Hispalis, a walled port on the Baetis (Guadalquivir). The Roman grid, forum life, and river commerce set the city’s enduring role as a gateway inland.
As Ishbiliyya under Muslim rule (8th–13th c.), Seville flourished with markets, gardens, and learned courts. The Almohads left signature landmarks: the Giralda (as a great mosque’s minaret) and the Torre del Oro guarding the river.
Taken by Ferdinand III in 1248, Sevilla raised a vast Gothic cathedral on the former mosque site. In the 16th century, the Casa de Contratación made Sevilla Spain’s Atlantic hub – wealth fed arts and craft, nurturing painters like Velázquez and Murillo.
When the trade monopoly moved to Cádiz (1717), Sevilla pivoted: new bridges (notably the Triana Bridge, 1852), rail links, and flourishing ceramics kept industry alive. The Ibero-American Exposition (1929) created Plaza de España and grand parks; Expo ’92 and the AVE high-speed rail tied Sevilla to Madrid and Europe. Since then, pedestrianized avenues, bike lanes, and riverfront renewal have refreshed the historic core, while contemporary landmarks like Metropol Parasol signal a confident, creative city.
