Course Summary

Portugal has one of the oldest borders in Europe, with an exceptional range of different landscapes just a short distance away, lots of leisure activities and a unique cultural heritage, where tradition and modernity blend together in perfect harmony.

Its superb, quality cuisine, fine wines and hospitable people make this country a tourist paradise of the highest quality.

Portugal’s distinctive culture and history are the result of historical occurrences and the worldview of a people who, as they learnt from the rest of the world, fitted this new knowledge to their way of life and their territory.

Cities, monuments, and landscapes — all of which recount a portion of world history — reveal the defining characteristics of the Portuguese spirit. Many of these treasures have been recognized as part of the world’s shared heritage, earning UNESCO World Heritage status.

In 25 cases, spanning historic centres, archaeological sites, cultural landscapes, natural parks, and intangible assets, UNESCO has already bestowed the title of World Heritage Site. These Portuguese contributions to world history are not to be missed and are the ideal justification for exploring the entire nation, from north to south.

Course Goals

This course aims to empower participants by raising awareness about safeguarding and promoting distinctive culture, cuisine, arts and sustainable tourism assets.

This is essential to balance against the latest globalised food trends that impact our planet, health, local economies and the European identity expressed on multiple social and biographical identities.

It also intends to use Museums, nature and urban landscapes as agents of sustainable development and as educational work for heritage dissemination, both in formal and informal education areas as a relevant reference point in the case of formal education.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explore the cultural dynamics of each curriculum through experimental and scientific expertise, using the resources that interactive centers have to offer;
  • Raise awareness for natural heritage preservation by creating science interpretative centers;
  • Develop participants’ learning validation through methods that are suitable for informal heritage environments;
  • Use interactive and participative working methods to achieve better teaching practices;
  • Develop a European dimension of the teaching-learning process;
  • Deepen European values, policies and educational philosophy through heritage sites and landmarks;
  • Provide teachers with an insight into Porto’s culture and heritage;
  • Enhance communicative competence in English;
  • Transfer and share core values, experiences and effective teaching practices with other teachers and colleagues;
  • Promote intercultural awareness;
  • Facilitate experience and cultural exchanges between European participants and Portuguese teaching personnel, which results in a fruitful international experience;
