Course Summary

This course empowers educators to actively engage students in environmental awareness and sustainability, through hands-on, practical methodologies. Using the city of Porto as a living learning environment, participants will design and adapt sustainability projects that can be transferred directly to their own schools and local communities.

Daily Program

DAY 1

  • Sustainability, climate action and global challenges (SDGs)
  • Why schools matter in building sustainable futures
  • Environmental education as a cross-curricular approach
  • European good practices in green education
  • Practical activity: environmental self-assessment of participants’ schools

DAY 2

  • Urban sustainability: mobility, waste, consumption and public space
  • The city of Porto as a case study for environmental education
  • Outdoor learning methodologies for sustainability
  • Field activity: exploring the city as a learning space
  • Turning urban observations into classroom activities

DAY 3

  • Active methodologies: project-based learning and experiential education
  • Engaging students as environmental change-makers
  • Designing school-based sustainability projects
  • Workshop: building a green action project for students
  • Assessing impact and student engagement

DAY 4

  • Adapting projects to different local and cultural contexts
  • Involving families, local authorities and communities
  • Communication strategies for environmental awareness
  • Practical activity: local implementation plan (each participant)
  • Digital tools to support green education projects

DAY 5

  • Presentation of participants’ projects
  • Peer feedback and collaborative improvement
  • Ensuring continuity and long-term impact in schools
  • Course roundup & review

The daily schedule/ program describes likely activities but may differ based on the trainer's discretion and objectives. Classes are scheduled for either the morning or afternoon, based on the provider's preference.
