Course summary



The aim of this course is to provide the participants with teaching skills and (in)formation on deafness and strategies to educate and teach deaf and hard of hearing students, that help achieve a balanced development.


Bilingual and Bicultural Education (Sign language is the 1st language of deaf and written and/or oral language of the majority as the 2nd language) the use of visual strategies are the best ways to promote a quality education.

Medical vs cultural-linguistic view of deaf, early sign language acquisition, communication, reading and writing strategies, deaf role models, deaf pride and “deafhood”, school’s curricular adjustments to attend deaf educational needs will be presented and discussed.


Course objectives



  • To know deafness types and degrees;


  • To know technical aids for the deaf – hearing technologies;


  • To get information about deaf history;


  • To know how to communicate with deaf;


  • To understand educational needs of deaf students and educational approaches for deaf;


  • To recognize sing language as 1st language of most deaf and bilingual and bicultural education for deaf;


  • To understand that sign language is a full and rich language with all potencial,


  • To get a positive view on Deaf Culture and Sign Language,


  • To know international laws and conventions about deaf rights and deaf education,


  • To interact and create documents and resources to work with deaf,


  • To use ICT in the classroom to improve learning,


At the end the participants are expected to:

Have scientific and pedagogic knowledge about methods and strategies of intervention that provide educational, social and psychological success to deaf children and students such as:


  • Know different approaches to deaf education used throughout time;


  • View sign language as a way to culture, education and social integration;


  • Know and respect international deaf values and movements;


  • The need to know and use sign language to teach deaf students;


  • Use resources to improve deaf students learning;


  • Create adequate resources to use in classroom (deaf pedagogy);


  • Promote deaf students literacy and reading skills.

Course Duration and Costs

All costs of our courses can be supported with a grant under KA1 of the Erasmus+ programme.

Learning Together charges for a 6 days course 570 euros per participant (A+B)

A - Course fee and Duration:

For our 6 days course, the price fee is 420 euro for tuition and materials (6 day course x 70,00 Euros per day). This is covered with the course fee that you get with your KA1 grant: 70 euro per day.

B - Organizational Support: Payment of 150 EUR per participant (total amount).

Each educational organization also receives 350 Euros per participant for organizational support.  Learning Together will only charge you 150 Euros for administration and organization costs (Local organization, pedagogic support activities, learning validation, certification and Europass Mobility validation). This fee also includes the social program below.

Social Program

  • Cultural Heritage day: Guide visit to the city of Porto;

  • Visit to” Ribeira” and Boat Trip;

  • Visit to Port Wine Cellars.


To be paid by yourself from the KA1 grant


  • Your grant covers travel costs. The amount is calculated based on the distance that you need to travel from your home place to the course.


  • Your accommodation and meals will be assured through "Individual Support".                                                              The amount that you receive to cover the costs of your stay depends on the country that you choose. The range for Portugal is between 60-120 Euros per day and participant. This amount covers your stay at hotel and your meals. Learning Together doesn´t book your stay at the hotel, but we can give you tips and advice for your booking. Plenty of restaurants are available on the city for your daily meals. This option allows you to explore more freely our city, hotels, restaurants and course travels.
